American Idol Recap: Inspirational Songs

Read my latest American Idol recap.

This week, the remaining four ‘American Idol‘ hopefuls were challenged with singing standards penned by Leiber & Stoller, as well as songs that inspire them. Interestingly, each ‘Idol’ went with a ballad (or bombastic ballad, if you’re James Durbin) for their inspirational song. The only conclusion PopCrush can come up with is that it’s anyone’s crown to wear.

American Idol Recap: Now and Then Songs

They were allowed to perform one modern song and one from their parents’ era. It was a test of how adaptable the singers are. Most of them gave good performances, but those who gave iffy performances during the first song (Jacob Lusk, Haley Reinhart) quickly redeemed themselves the second time out.

At Pop Crush we think James Durbin is going to win American Idol.

Durbin straddles the line between pop and rock in a manner similar to original ‘Idol’ Kelly Clarkson. Because of that, Season 10 may very well be his.

While much of the monarchy-less America is obsessed with England’s upcoming royal wedding for some reason or other, ‘American Idol‘ was celebrating music royalty in the form of songwriter Carole King this week. Even if you don’t know King as a vocalist or even by name, you no doubt know her songs, as pop stars have been belting out her tunes, like ‘Will You Still Love me Tomorrow’ and ‘You’ve Got a Friend,’ for much of the modern era.

On tonight’s episode of ‘American Idol,’ the remaining seven contestants picked from a pool of songs released in the 21st Century. That’s a lot of choices spanning the last 11 years — giving the contestants a chance to choose more recent hits from their favored genres. The Idols channeled their country and R&B roots, among others, but two standout performances rocked our world.

On tonight’s episode of ‘American Idol,’ the remaining six boys and two girls were allowed to choose songs that appeared in movies. The Idols surprised us with plenty of variety tonight, selecting songs from all genres of song and film, making for a dynamic episode that represented all walks of life and musical tastes. We were treated to rock, pop, jazz and metal! Yes, metal. Here’s our breakdown of this week’s performances! It’s hard to predict who is going to go home.

American Idol Recap: Elton John Week

The remaining 11 members of this season’s ‘American Idol‘ crew took on the expansive catalog of Elton John this week and as usual, there were mixed results. The episode was a bit sleepy, with most of the contestants performing any of John’s numerous ballads. Regardless of the pacing, big ups to the contestants for having the courage to flip, change and put their own spin on John’s classics.

American Idol Recap: Motown Week

‘American Idol‘ contestants were dispatched with the task of singing Motown classics this week. Many of the contestants did Motown founder, Berry Gordy, proud, while a few stumbled. Regardless of individual performances, Motown week was one of the most entertaining theme weeks of the season. Tomorrow night we will find out who is staying and who is going!

American Idol Recap: Top 10 Finalists

America has voted and the ‘American Idol‘ Top 10 is as follows. This batch of 10 hopefuls was voted on by the whopping 40 million fans who tuned in over the past two nights as the competition gets tougher, the talent pool shrinks and the stakes increase. Three other contestants advanced as wild cards; those who were given a stay of execution, so to speak, were chosen by the judges and then voted on by fans.
