American Idol Recap: Elton John Week

Read my recap of Elton John week at American Idol.

The remaining 11 members of this season’s ‘American Idol‘ crew took on the expansive catalog of Elton John this week and as usual, there were mixed results. The episode was a bit sleepy, with most of the contestants performing any of John’s numerous ballads. Regardless of the pacing, big ups to the contestants for having the courage to flip, change and put their own spin on John’s classics.

America has voted and the ‘American Idol‘ Top 10 is as follows. This batch of 10 hopefuls was voted on by the whopping 40 million fans who tuned in over the past two nights as the competition gets tougher, the talent pool shrinks and the stakes increase. A lot of early favorites got the go-ahead, like the soulful, somewhat hysterical Jacob Lusk, whose ‘God Bless the Child’ was deemed the best ‘Idol’ performance ever by longest tenured judge Randy Jackson. Haley Reinhart and her huge, Taylor Swift-style blond ringlets were matched only by her room-filling voice. We love how she extended her hand while singing. Casey Abrams, the Seth Rogen doppelganger, strummed a stand up bass while singing ‘Georgia on My Mind,’ which caught the attention of fellow bassist Randy Jackson. Robbie Rosen made Jennifer Lopez tear up as he tickled the ivories, while Lauren Alaina reprised ‘I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.’ They are all still favorites in these early rounds.

Country baritone and fan fave Scotty McCreery gave an encore performance of a Josh Turner song and sticking with what he knows served him well. He gives J. Lo goosebumps, too. Chris Medina, who sings for his wheelchair-bound girlfriend, also got another chance. Jacee Badeaux, the young, heavy set boy with the angelic voice, also impressed, as did Hollie Cavanaugh, who was way more confident in her second round than her first, where she sobbed.
