Rihanna, ‘Talk that Talk’ Review

Read my review of ‘Talk That Talk’ by Rihanna over at Pop Crush.

It should go without saying that RiRi blurs the line between pop and soft porn, eschewing confectionery pop music fluff in favor of hard beats and harder words. RiRi goes hardcore, mixing good-girl-gone-bad lyrics with beats that simulate the rhythmic motion of love. And she does all this while exploring her island roots and Barbados upbringing, incorporating tropical percussion and vocal cadences throughout.

Be sure to read my recap of the latest X Factor.

With Thanksgiving on the horizon, the ‘X Factor‘ Top 9 performed songs that celebrated and gave thanks to crucial people in their lives. Two acts will be voted off this week, so there was a lot at stake. We also learned so much about the contestants and their personal lives beyond their talents, so it was an enlightening, eye-opening episode.

X Factor Recap: Stacy Francis Eliminated

Read my post post about Stacy Francis getting eliminated on X Factor.

Part of the problem is the fact that she ping-ponged back and forth between two polar opposite styles. One week she was a hybrid of gospel and soul, and the next a pop starlet wannabe. Her voice, style and age are more fitting for the former, but Francis’ pipes are nothing short of stunning. She hasn’t committed to a style, and it was always in question whether or not she could sell records to the American music fan.

Lady Gaga ‘Marry the Night’ Prelude Video

Lady Gaga released a prelude for the video for ‘Marry the Night.’

This minute-and-a-half long precursor features a Gaga voiceover, as she is being wheeled on that same gurney. Wearing a short, Louise Brooks-style brown bob with bangs and bright orange lipstick, Gaga declares: “When I look back on my life, it’s not that I don’t want to see things exactly as they happened. I prefer to remember them in an artistic way. Truthfully, the lie of it all is much more honest because I invented it.”

X Factor Recap: The Rock Song Edition!

Read my X Factor recap from tonights show.

The fist-clenching Nicole Scherzinger was quite critical this evening, showing disapproval for most of the performers except Marcus Canty. We were also unsure of what was up with that one-shoulder, leather dress thing she was wearing, too. We prefer Nic when she’s kinder and gentler. Oh, and about that forced banter between the judges? It burned at a fever pitch tonight. We guess Rock Week does that to people.

X Factor Recap – Top 11 Perform Movie Songs

Read my X Factor Recap, where the the Top 11 perform movie songs.

We’re a little fatigued by all the judge’s insults towards one another — Simon Cowell jabbing Paula Abdul over costume choices, L.A. Reid ribbing Simon about his song selections. It’s a bit much and feels somewhat forced — not to mention that it’s distracting and takes attention away from the people on the stage.

Top 11 Metal Albums of the 1990s

Check out my feature, Top 11 Metal Albums of the 1990s, on Loudwire.

The enormous growth of the genre in the ’80s certainly carried over at the start of the decade, with powerhouse classics from the Big 4 of thrash kicking things off at a steady clip. But what followed was the wholesale retreat of metal from the mainstream as alternative rock, grunge and bands like Nirvana challenged for cultural supremacy.

Justin Bieber, ‘Under the Mistletoe’ Album Review

Check out my Justin Bieber, ‘Under the Mistletoe,’ album review.

Sonically, though, the most notable thing about ‘Under the Mistletoe’ is the growth and maturity of The Biebs’ voice. His vocals have deepened, and save for a scant few exceptions, you won’t find the higher registered teenage style we experienced on his previous releases.
